Alex's
Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer In 2000, a 4 year
old cancer patient named Alexandra "Alex" Scott
announced a seemingly simple idea -she was holding a lemonade stand
to raise money to help "her doctors" find a cure for kids
with cancer. The idea was put into action by Alex and her older brother,
Patrick, when they set up the first "Alex's Lemonade Stand for
Childhood Cancer" on their front lawn in July of 2000.
For the
next four years, despite her deteriorating health, Alex held an annual
lemonade stand to raise money for childhood cancer research.
Following her inspirational example, thousands of lemonade stands
and other fundraising events have been held across the country by children,
schools, businesses, and organizations, all to benefit Alex's Lemonade
Stand Foundation for childhood cancer. On August 1st, 2004, Alex
died
peacefully at the age of 8 -- she had raised over $1 million for
childhood cancer research in her short lifetime.

Steingraber, Ph.D. is an internationally recognized expert on the environmental
links to cancer and reproductive health. She received her doctorate
in biology from the University of Michigan and master's degree in English
from Illinois State University.
Steingraber's highly acclaimed book, Living Downstream:
An Ecologist Looks at Cancer and the Environment presents
cancer as a human rights issue. It was the first to bring together
data on toxic releases
with newly released data from U.S. cancer registries. Living Downstream won
praise from international media, including The
Washington Post, the Nation, The Chicago Tribune, Kirkus Reviews, Publishers
Weekly,
The Lancet, and The London Times. In 1997, Steingraber was named
a Ms.
Magazine Woman of the Year. In 1998, she received from the Jenifer
Altman foundation the first annual Altman Award for "the inspiring
and poetic use of science to elucidate the causes of cancer," and
from the New England chapter of the American Medical Writers Association,
the Will Solimene Award for "excellence in medical communication." In
1999, the Sierra Club heralded Steingraber as "the new Rachel

The
purpose of the Center

look for environmental risk factors in their patients;
informing patients, their families and communities about
cancer risks
and ways to reduce their chance of recurrence; providing
healthy options regarding exercise, nutrition and avoidable
chemical exposures; evaluating public policies to determine
how they affect the environment and health; and testing
ways of reducing cancer risk through "greening" buildings,
including hospitals.

Cancer Centers exist to foster cancer-focused research, in part through the creation
of formal programs. A program comprises the activities of a group of investigators

funded research. Programs should be highly interactive and lead to exchange of
information, experimental techniques, and ideas that enhance the individual productivity
of scientists and result in collaborations and joint publications.
