Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer In 2000, a 4 year old cancer patient named Alexandra "Alex" Scott announced a seemingly simple idea -she was holding a lemonade stand to raise money to help "her doctors" find a cure for kids with cancer. The idea was put into action by Alex and her older brother, Patrick, when they set up the first "Alex's Lemonade Stand for Childhood Cancer" on their front lawn in July of 2000.

For the next four years, despite her deteriorating health, Alex held an annual lemonade stand to raise money for childhood cancer research. Following her inspirational example, thousands of lemonade stands and other fundraising events have been held across the country by children, schools, businesses, and organizations, all to benefit Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation for childhood cancer. On August 1st, 2004, Alex died peacefully at the age of 8 -- she had raised over $1 million for childhood cancer research in her short lifetime.

Ecologist, author, and cancer survivor, Sandra Steingraber, Ph.D. is an internationally recognized expert on the environmental links to cancer and reproductive health. She received her doctorate in biology from the University of Michigan and master's degree in English from Illinois State University.

Steingraber's highly acclaimed book, Living Downstream: An Ecologist Looks at Cancer and the Environment presents cancer as a human rights issue. It was the first to bring together data on toxic releases with newly released data from U.S. cancer registries. Living Downstream won praise from international media, including The Washington Post, the Nation, The Chicago Tribune, Kirkus Reviews, Publishers Weekly, The Lancet, and The London Times. In 1997, Steingraber was named a Ms. Magazine Woman of the Year. In 1998, she received from the Jenifer Altman foundation the first annual Altman Award for "the inspiring and poetic use of science to elucidate the causes of cancer," and from the New England chapter of the American Medical Writers Association, the Will Solimene Award for "excellence in medical communication." In 1999, the Sierra Club heralded Steingraber as "the new Rachel Carson." And in 2001, Carson's own alma mater, Chatham College, selected Steingraber to receive its biennial Rachel Carson Leadership Award.

Environmental Oncology

The purpose of the Center for Environmental Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute is to promote further research on the environmental causes of cancer and educate the public about what we already have learned. Specific goals of the Center for Environmental Oncology include: promoting and performing research that identifies causes of cancer in the environment; teaching health professionals how to look for environmental risk factors in their patients; informing patients, their families and communities about cancer risks and ways to reduce their chance of recurrence; providing healthy options regarding exercise, nutrition and avoidable chemical exposures; evaluating public policies to determine how they affect the environment and health; and testing ways of reducing cancer risk through "greening" buildings, including hospitals.

Toxic chemical pollution threatens every American family and every community. In 2005 alone, more than 923 million pounds of cancer-causing chemicals were released into our air and water. Does your sunscreen work? An investigation of nearly 1,000 brand-name sunscreen products finds that 4 out of 5 contain chemicals that may pose health hazards or don't adequately protect skin from the sun's damaging rays. Some of the worst offenders are leading brands like Coppertone, Banana Boat, and Neutrogena. More than a million cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in the U.S. every year, but FDA still hasn't finalized sunscreen standards first announced 30 years ago. Meanwhile, companies are free to claim but not provide broad spectrum protection. Until FDA requires that all sunscreens be safe and effective, Environmental Working Group's comprehensive sunscreen guide—including a list of 143 products that offer very good sun protection—fills in the gaps.

Research

National Cancer Institute's Research Programs
Cancer Centers exist to foster cancer-focused research, in part through the creation of formal programs. A program comprises the activities of a group of investigators who share common scientific interests and goals and participate in competitively funded research. Programs should be highly interactive and lead to exchange of information, experimental techniques, and ideas that enhance the individual productivity of scientists and result in collaborations and joint publications.

Stand Up To Cancer

Stand Up To Cancer, a new initiative to raise philanthropic dollars for accelerating ground-breaking research, launches today through an unprecedented collaboration uniting the major television networks, entertainment industry executives, celebrities and prominent leaders in cancer research and patient advocacy. ABC, CBS and NBC will donate one hour of simultaneous commercial-free primetime for a nationally televised fundraising event to air on September 5, 2008 (8 pm EDT and PDT), aimed at rallying the public around the goal of ending cancer's reign as a leading cause of death.

Network evening news anchors Charles Gibson, Katie Couric and Brian Williams will announce the initiative together during live appearances today on ABC's "Good Morning America," CBS's "The Early Show," and NBC's "TODAY show."
