In my work on cancer prevention with Less Cancer, I engage deeply with diverse people and communities. Often, our only common thread is a shared priority for good health and the goal of reducing cancer rates. In today’s world, it’s easy to become distracted by personalities, preferences, likes, dislikes, and the faults of others. For me, staying focused on what truly matters is essential. Despite our differences, we can always find common interests and shared values, no matter how small.
While my friends and family hold a special place in my heart, my work empowers me to care for them by striving to make the next generation healthier than the last. I am deeply committed to elevating the voices of those who may not be heard, supporting their initiatives—not speaking for them, but amplifying their voices and empowering them. I actively support, promote, and engage with several social justice issues, including environmental causes.
I also have a passion for good food—understanding where and how it is raised or grown and appreciating its presentation. Art, in its many forms, is another of my great loves. Additionally, I enjoy riding my bike, waving to people, saying hello, and connecting with different communities. Through service and creativity, I express myself and uphold the values I care most about.
Navigating a Complex World
As we navigate a complex world filled with countless opinions and platforms, it’s crucial to focus on what we care most about and stay on topic relative to issues and localities—not personalities or things beyond our influence.
There is so much good work being done that soundbites often make no meaningful difference. While it’s tempting to have an opinion on everything, it’s not necessary. Constantly criticizing without constructive action is exhausting for you and everyone else, adding negative static to an already noisy world.
Join with Purpose
If you want to join a team, army, or project to fight for a cause close to your heart or promote something meaningful, do so with a clear plan and genuine care. Spend your time doing what you love and with people you enjoy. Focusing on others’ flaws without offering solutions is a waste of time. Those who take risks and put themselves out there often face criticism, as it’s easier for people to stay home, point out flaws, and do nothing but criticize.
While it’s complex and hard work, we must strive to care more and love more about the issues we hold dear.
Finding Common Priorities
Should you be looking for others to share your priorities? Be patient, stay on task, and look for the common thread. The initial work for Less Cancer was a super hard sell. It took thousands of conversations to get people to understand the mission. It mostly required a great deal of patience and the ability to seek the common thread to have conversations that truly make a difference. By meeting people where they are, we can all learn from this approach, as the tools going forward are time-tested for listening, engaging, and acting with care and thoughtfulness.
